Fluency is a word that your first grader is going to be hearing a lot. Fluency means how quickly and accurately you can do something. For the first part of he year we have been working on mastering the basics - phonics, addition and subtraction facts. For the remainder of the year we will continue to build on those skills but we will also be developing fluency. The more automatically your child can do things like read sight words and recall basic math facts, the more energy they can devote to learning tougher skills. If a child is still trying to sound out basic words or use their fingers or counters for simple addition and subtraction, the more difficult the work is.
Beginning this week we will be taking timed tests in addition, subtraction and reading once a week. We will follow this schedule:
Wednesdays - subtraction facts (5 minutes)
Fridays - addition facts ( 5 minutes)
Once a week reading fluency (1 minute times)
The more your child practices these skills at home, the better they will get. Here are some key words to help your child decide if the math problem calls for addition or subtraction.
